Mixed Ability Training at Guns & Noses

Progress at your pace, not someone else’s

Not every dog fits neatly into a level. And not every training journey is linear.

Our Mixed Ability classes are designed for dogs (and humans) who are learning, progressing, wobbling, and growing — sometimes all at once.

This is training that meets you where you are, not where you think you should be.

What are Mixed Ability classes?

Held at Simply K9 Ltd in Brough

Mixed Ability classes bring together dogs at different stages of training in a calm, supportive environment, where exercises are adapted to suit each dog’s needs.

Rather than pushing everyone through the same drills, we focus on:

  • Individual progress

  • Emotional regulation

  • Building skills that hold up in real life

This allows dogs to learn around distractions while still being set up to succeed.

Who are Mixed Ability classes for?

These classes are ideal if your dog:

  • Has completed puppy training and is ready for the next step

  • Knows the basics but struggles in new or distracting environments

  • Is enthusiastic, clever, and easily over-aroused

  • Needs help building focus, calmness, or confidence

  • Has good days and wobbly days (don’t we all?)

They’re also perfect for owners who:

  • Want ongoing support without pressure

  • Don’t want to be compared to others

  • Value understanding over correction

  • Like training indoors rather than in a field

You don’t need a “finished” dog.
You just need willingness to learn.

What we work on in class

Exercises are adjusted to suit each dog, but commonly include:

  • Engagement and focus around other dogs

  • Loose lead walking foundations

  • Recall and responsiveness

  • Impulse control and emotional regulation

  • Calmness around movement and excitement

  • Real-life manners that transfer outside the class

Progress is measured against your dog yesterday — not the dog next to you.

We work towards the APDT Good Companion awards, there are 4 levels to progress though.

If you complete those there are more awards to achieve too!
